Will The 'Xbox Scorpio' Be The Last Microsoft Console?

The recent introduction of the all-new and improved Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles have brought a lot of rumors and speculation regarding the future of console gaming. But according to Xbox head man Phil Spencer, we shouldn't be expecting anything too drastic of a change going forward.

Spencer gives his thoughts on the state of the console gaming industry

Spencer recently sat down for a very informative chat with GameInformer regarding all things Xbox, more specifically about the upcoming Xbox Scorpio console. Generally, it's a more-improved version of the Xbox One, featuring a lot more horsepower, a much bigger hard drive, VR capabilities, and more. But even though this upgraded version of the franchise console is launching only a couple years following the almighty Xbox, Spencer made it clear that we should not be expecting to see a new console shipping every couple of years from now.

The year of consoles

Earlier this year marked the revelation of both the Xbox Scorpio and the PlayStation 4 Pro, which were basically upgraded versions of their respective consoles. This got a lot of people hyped and speculating that the console gaming is taking some huge steps on innovating for the future, specifically console gaming is going to go the way of mobile hardware, increasing portability and convenience for every player.

Spencer: Don't expect consoles to come out on a yearly basis

That description doesn't make a lot of sense, though, according to Spencer. He cleared things out that, for the most part, consoles are being sold at a loss to the company. The time, effort and cost of developing consoles on a regular basis, and then shipping them worldwide is at a loss, which doesn't make sense at all. He explained further that real money comes from selling games both physical and digital, which is better than having a lot of new consoles launching over that same period of time.

The Scorpio will be a revolutionary upgrade

But right now it doesn't seem like the Scorpio will have any intentions of breaking up its gaming audience. Nothing will work on these new consoles that won't work on the old ones. In Spencer's perspective, the Scorpio is a revolutionary upgrade to the Xbox One that should satisfy a lot of serious and dedicated fans, or even newcomers who are just breaking into the new generation. But as what has been confirmed, we will not be seeing the Xbox Gemini or Taurus anytime soon.
